Stainless Steel vs Sterling
Stainless vs Sterling: The differences
At HeartRockLife, I've got you covered.
Stainless steel and sterling silver are both great options for necklace and pendant chains. I offer both, and here's why:
Jewelry is personal. We want what we want, whether a specific function and purpose, a specific look, long-term durability, and/ or daily wear. And while stainless and sterling have a similar look in general, there are differences.
Read below so you can be confident in your choice when purchasing a piece from HeartRockLife.
Stainless Steel
Stainless is a mix of iron-based alloys, containing a minimum of 10.5% chromium which enhances its resistance to corrosion. Does not contain copper.
- resists corrosion
- needs little to no cleaning and maintenance
- very sturdy and durable
- lightweight
- non-tarnishing
- hypoallergenic*
* HRL uses surgical grade stainless steel. Although labeled "hypoallergenic" and does not contain copper, it does contain a small amount of nickel.
Sterling Silver
Sterling silver is an alloy mix of 92.5% silver and 7.5% other metals, typically copper.
- resists corrosion
- use polishing cloths to clean dirty silver pieces (cloth included!)
- softer metal choice, scratches may accumulate over time
- can be more delicate and may need more care
- surface may tarnish with exposure to air (polishing cloth comes included!)
- will develop a warm patina over time
Still unsure?
The choice between stainless steel and sterling silver is up to you. I personally wear both, depending on the jewelry piece. If you are not concerned about the metal material of your chain, choose and wear whichever appeals to you! If you have additional questions, please do not hesitate to connect with me. I am here for you!
Warm love,
Amanda
