Resolutions vs. Intentions: A Gentler Way to Set Meaningful Goals

Resolutions vs. Intentions: A Gentler Way to Set Meaningful Goals

It's here!

As we reach the final chapter of the year, many of us feel the familiar pull to set New Year resolutions—those bold declarations of who we think we need to become on January 1st. “I will do this.” “I won’t do that.” “This year will finally be the year I change.”

But what if there’s a gentler, truer way to begin again?
What if setting intentions felt more supportive than rigid goal setting?
What if the path to growth isn’t paved with pressure… but presence?

Resolutions vs. Intentions: What’s the Real Difference?

Let's dive in.

Resolutions

Resolutions tend to be outcome-based.  They often focus on external results rather than intentional living or internal alignment. They’re focused on fixing something, changing something, or achieving something measurable.
  • Lose 20 pounds.
  • Wake up at 5 a.m. every day.
  • Stop overthinking everything.
There’s nothing wrong with resolutions, but they often come with a subtle underlying message:
“I’m not enough yet. I will be enough when I achieve this.”

That pressure can make resolutions feel heavy, rigid, and easy to abandon when life inevitably shifts, as it always does.

Intentions

Intentions are energy-based. They center around how you want to feel, show up, grow, and move through your life, making them a powerful alternative when exploring the difference between intentions and resolutions.

  • I want to feel strong in my body.
  • I want to honor my mornings with more presence.
  • I want to trust myself more deeply.
Intentions don’t demand that you become someone new overnight. Or even in a specified time frame. Instead, they reconnect you to who you already are, and how you want to support and show up for yourself.

Resolutions say: “Do more."
Intentions whisper: “Be more.”

Why Intentions Hold Power for Growth, Expansion & Ease

When you lean into personal growth intentions, you allow your goals to evolve alongside you rather than work against you.

1. Intentions meet you where you are.

They honor your current season, your emotional landscape, your needs, and your capacity. No forcing. No shame. Just truth.

2. Intentions grow with you.

Where resolutions can feel like all-or-nothing, intentions flex and evolve. They adapt as you do.

3. Intentions support long-term transformation.

Because they’re connected to your internal world (your values, energy, and desires), they anchor deeper and last longer.

4. Intentions root your goals in purpose.

Instead of chasing an accomplishment, you’re guided by meaning. Each step feels aligned, not forced.

5. Intentions feel more compassionate.

No guilt if you stumble. No starting over for the 10th time. Just recommitting to the energy you want to embody.

How to Set Meaningful Intentions for the New Year

Here is a simple, soulful process that helps you enter the new year with clarity and grounded purpose:

1. Reflect on the past year with honesty

Looking back is one of the most powerful self-reflections practices you can use before setting intentions. Instead of asking, “What didn’t I do?” try asking:

    • What did I learn about myself?
    • What moments felt most aligned?
    • What am I proud of?
    • What do I no longer want to carry forward?

Reflection creates space for what’s next.

2. Connect with how you want to feel

This step invites soulful goal setting and deeper emotional clarity. Let your intentions arise from emotional truth, not external pressure. Ask yourself:

    • How do I want to show up in my life?
    • What energy do I want to embody?
    • What experiences do I want more of?

3. Choose a guiding word or phrase

Choosing a guiding word for the year offers direction without rigidity. A single word can become a compass for the entire year.

Examples: Return. Expand. Nourish. Align. Soften. Strengthen. Grow. Trust.

This is also a beautiful place to weave in your heart stone jewelry later on, each stone as a wearable reminder of the intention.

4. Create an intention statement

This shift supports gentle goal setting that honors your season of life, turning your guiding word into an intentional promise to yourself.

Resolution: “I want to read 30 books.”
Intention: “I deepen my mind and nourish my imagination.”

Resolution: “I will stop procrastinating.”
Intention: “I will show up with presence.”

5. Anchor your intention with a supportive ritual

This is where the magic happens. Rituals help your intentions live beyond the moment you set it, bringing them into your everyday life.

Simple tools for setting intentions, such as journaling, candles, or wearable reminders, can deepen your practice. Some ideas:

• Morning grounding: Begin each day with your intention word, spoken aloud or held in your heart.

• Candle ritual: Choose a candle that represents your intention. Light it while journaling or reflecting.

• Monthly check-in: On the first of each month, return to your intention.
Ask: How am I living this? Where do I want to shift?

• Use tools that hold your intention: This can include
    • an intention journal or planner
    • an affirmation card
    • a crystal or heart stone that carries the energy you’re calling in
    • a meaningful piece of jewelry you touch each time you realign
    • a vision board or small altar
    • a weekly ritual like a walk, meditation, or creative hour
• Embody the intention through action: Intentions become growth when you let them shape your choices:

“Does this support the energy I’m calling in?”

The Heart of It All

Resolutions can be helpful—but they often speak to who we think we should be.

Intentions invite the truest, most grounded parts of us, allowing growth to unfold naturally through holistic personal growth practices.

One asks for perfection.

The other invites connection.

And in a season that’s all about refreshing, renewing, and beginning again, the most powerful thing you can do is choose the energy you want to carry forward. Returning to New Year intentions can feel like an act of self-trust, one that honors reflection, presence, and meaningful rituals to guide you gently and consistently, into the new year.

May you carry your intentions lightly, letting them guide you rather than pressure you. And on days when you forget, may you meet yourself with grace and begin again.
